About the Council

An independent community initiative for the care of Hawaiʻi’s living landscapes.

Source check: October 26, 2026

The Hawaii Invasive Species Council website is being developed as a community-led resource for people who care for Hawaiʻi’s land, food, and cultural relationships. It brings together accessible information, questions for public institutions, and practical ways to participate.

Our purpose

We want communities to be able to understand a pest problem, examine the evidence behind a proposed response, and choose responsible actions that fit their places and priorities. Coconut rhinoceros beetle is the first area of concentrated work.

Our editorial direction prioritizes nonchemical management, Hawaiian knowledge shared with permission, and scientific findings presented with their limitations.

A distinct community identity

This initiative is independent of the government Hawaii Invasive Species Council. The State council was established in 2003 and coordinates policy, planning, and interagency support. This community site does not exercise those government powers or speak for public agencies.

We use the name Hawaii Invasive Species Council for this independent community initiative. References to government reports are citations, not claims of affiliation.

How we are developing this resource

The website is a working draft for internal-team review. Organizational membership, adopted policies, contact details, and a public launch date will be added when confirmed. No listed institution is represented as a partner without its agreement.
