Accessibility
Readable information and practical access for different ways of browsing.
This draft uses semantic headings, keyboard-operable menus, descriptive links, visible focus states, image alternative text, and a responsive layout.
Using the site
A skip link goes directly to the main content. Menus open by keyboard or pointer, and Escape closes an open menu. Article pages include a print option. Site search and species filtering use JavaScript; the site map remains available without it.
Guides and document access
The field guides include chapter links, adjustable text size, printable pages and downloadable review editions. Library filters and PDF reader controls need JavaScript. The complete catalog and direct document links remain visible without library filtering.
The reader offers a page preview and extracted text. Text order depends on the source PDF and may not reproduce tables or multi-column layouts accurately; scanned pages may have no extractable text. This is not an OCR service. Use the source document and request accessible alternatives where necessary.
Ongoing review
The internal team should review contrast, keyboard access, screen-reader output, Hawaiian text pronunciation, mobile layouts, and document accessibility before public launch. The current implementation is not a claim of formal accessibility certification.
Requesting assistance
A public contact for accessibility feedback will be added once the operator and contact details are confirmed. Until then, internal reviewers can report the page URL and the action that caused difficulty to the site administrator.
