How this community website handles browsing, report submissions, shared content reviews and locally saved preferences.
Our reporting form collects observations for the independent Hawaii Invasive Species Council community team. You can browse the guides without submitting a report or creating an account.
Information in a pest report
The form collects the species or uncertainty you describe, sighting date, island and location, observation details, any photos you choose to attach, and the contact details you provide. It also records your choices about follow-up and generalized public mapping. Only provide information relevant to the sighting and information you have permission to share.
Netlify Forms processes and stores submissions in our site account. Authorized account users can review and export the submission log for the team’s work. The form does not automatically send your report to a government agency.
The optional location button asks your browser for your location only when you choose to use it. You can decline that browser permission and describe the location yourself.
How our team uses reports
We review observations to inform internal records and team and community responses. When your contact preference allows follow-up, we may contact you using the details you provide if we need information about a report. A submission is an observation, not a confirmed identification or a promise of a response or treatment.
We do not publish names, contact details or precise locations. If you select the optional mapping permission, the team may use a generalized observation in community maps or summaries after review and removal of identifying details. That mapping choice does not authorize publication of your photos. Submissions are not automatically published.
Photograph uploads
Uploaded files have direct Netlify links that can be opened by anyone who has the link. Those links are available to account users in submission records and exports. Do not treat a photo upload as a private document store.
Upload only pest or damage images that you have permission to share. Exclude faces, house numbers, identifying documents, sensitive places and personal details in filenames. Remove image location metadata before uploading; put a necessary location in the form’s location fields instead.
Browsing and search
Netlify hosts this site and receives ordinary web requests. Site search runs in your browser using this site’s article index. Search terms and research filters appear in page URLs and may therefore be included in hosting logs.
Optional website analytics
With your permission, we use Google Analytics to understand visits to public resource pages and clicks on files in our download collection. Google Analytics loads only after you choose Accept analytics. Declining does not prevent you from using the website. You can change your choice using Analytics preferences in the footer of a public page. Your choice is stored in this browser for up to 180 days.
When enabled, Google Analytics uses analytics cookies and receives information about the public pages and listed downloads used, browser and device information, approximate location and referring website. We disable advertising personalization and Google signals in our site configuration. We do not send typed search terms, URL query strings, report contents, contact details, photographs, precise observation locations or private review notes to Google Analytics. Analytics is not loaded on reporting, sign-in, administrator, CMS or team review pages.
The website respects a browser’s Global Privacy Control signal by keeping Google Analytics disabled. Clearing browser storage or using another browser can change whether a saved analytics choice is available. Netlify’s own server-side monitoring is separate from this optional browser tracker.
Reading lists, documents and review notes
Research filters and queries appear in the page URL. Saved resources, guide text size, PDF reading positions and launch-review notes are stored only in this browser when local storage is available; they do not synchronize with other people or devices. Avoid entering sensitive personal details in review notes. Exported notes and citation lists are files you control.
The PDF reader loads the document you choose. Locally hosted documents are requested from this site; publisher-hosted documents are requested from that publisher, which receives ordinary web request information. A PDF selected from your device is read locally in the browser and is not uploaded by this site.
Shared content review checklist
Administrator and team review pages require the team password. Sign-in creates a secure session cookie lasting up to eight hours. The shared password does not verify individual identities; reviewer names remain self-reported. Sign out on shared computers.
On the content review checklist, Save item sends the decision, notes and optional reviewer name to Netlify Blobs in our site account, with a server timestamp, so signed-in reviewers on other devices can see the same record. Do not put sensitive personal information into review notes.
Earlier browser-only content review notes are not uploaded automatically. Restored notes remain a draft until Save item is selected. The separate launch-review checklist stores its notes only in your browser. Shared review records remain until replaced or removed by the site operator; there is no automatic expiry. Changing a review decision does not edit website articles. Exported review files may include unsaved drafts and are files you control.
External resources and fonts
Research and government source links take you to those providers, whose privacy practices apply there. Reporting through our form stays on this website. The design requests fonts from Google Fonts, which receives ordinary web requests.
Administrator editing
The hosted administrator page requires the same password as Team Review. Report submissions require a separate authorized Netlify account. The local editor saves content and uploaded images to the project folder and keeps backup copies; hosted content editing still requires a separately configured repository and authentication provider. Public visitors are not given write access.
Retention and privacy contact
The internal team has not yet published a retention period or a dedicated privacy contact. Those decisions remain on the launch-review checklist. No automatic deletion schedule is promised by this website. Please avoid submitting sensitive information that is unnecessary for a pest observation.
