Report a suspected invasive species using the form on this page. Our independent community team reviews these observations to inform team and community responses and may contact you for more information. You do not need to know the species to make a report.

Community observation record

Tell us what you found

Your report goes to the independent Hawaii Invasive Species Council community team. Our team can review observations, follow up when contact details are provided and your contact preference allows, and use them to inform community responses. This does not notify a government agency.

Observe from a safe distance. Do not touch, disturb, move, or transport an unknown organism just to complete this form. For immediate danger or a medical emergency, call 911. This form is not monitored as an emergency service, and we cannot promise a response time.

Fields marked are required. Your name, contact details, exact coordinates, and photos are optional.

01 The observation

A common or scientific name is useful. An uncertain identification is welcome.

Local Hawaiʻi time. Leave blank if unknown.

Record an ID only if it is visible safely; do not handle someone else’s trap.

Include size, color, number seen, behavior, nearby plants, habitat, or damage. A clear description helps us assess an uncertain identification.

Do not collect or move an organism just to answer this question.

02 Where you saw it

A place name, cross streets, mile marker, or nearby landmark is enough to start. Add an exact address only if you want to share it with our review team.

Decimal degrees, for example 22.096.

Decimal degrees, for example −159.526.

Only use your current location if you are at the sighting. Location is requested only when you choose the button.

03 Photos and details

Show the organism or damage clearly, with a size reference if safe. A second image of its surroundings can help.

Upload only species or habitat images. Avoid people, vehicle plates, documents, private interiors, and sensitive locations. Photos may contain location metadata, and uploaded files can be opened by anyone who has their file link. We do not publish the links on this website.

Up to three photos, each no larger than 2 MB; 6 MB total. JPEG, PNG, or WebP. For a large photo, video, or recording, mention it in the comments and leave a way to contact you.

Add relevant history, related observations, or questions. Do not include medical records or other sensitive personal information.

04 How we can follow up

Contact details are optional. Without them, we cannot ask follow-up questions or send you an individual response.

05 Your permission

Reports are logged in our site’s Netlify account for our authorized team to review and export. We do not automatically forward reports to government agencies or show raw reports in public. Read our privacy information.

Your report stays on this website when you submit.

Prepare a useful report

  • Record when and where you saw the organism or damage. Include the island and a location description; coordinates are helpful when available.
  • Describe what you saw, approximately how many, and whether it is still present. Keep a suspected identification separate from a confirmed one.
  • Take clear pest or damage photographs from a safe position, with a size reference when practical. Do not climb damaged palms or enter land without permission.
  • Avoid moving a suspected pest, plant, soil or mulch to another site. Do not transport a specimen without appropriate guidance.

What happens after you submit

Your submission is stored in our site account through Netlify Forms for internal review. The team can use observations to guide community work and maintain records. If you provide contact details and permit follow-up, we may get in touch about your report.

Submitting does not confirm an identification, arrange a treatment or guarantee a response time. This form is not an emergency or dispatch service. Reports are not automatically forwarded to a government agency.

Location privacy and community maps

Exact locations help the internal team understand an observation. Names, contact details and precise locations are not published by this website. The form separately asks whether you agree to a generalized observation appearing in community maps or summaries. That choice is optional and does not prevent you from reporting.

Public mapping requires team review and removal of identifying details; the mapping choice does not authorize publishing your photos. A submitted record does not appear automatically on a map. Do not include sacred-site information or another person’s private information without permission.

Choose photographs carefully

Upload only pest or damage images you have permission to share. Netlify stores uploads behind direct file links that can be opened by anyone who has the link. Do not upload faces, house numbers, identifying documents, sensitive cultural locations or other private details. Remove location metadata from images before uploading.

Use the form’s location fields for information needed by the internal team rather than placing an address or contact details in the image or filename. Read the privacy page for more about storage and use.
